Today we practiced counting in 5's. Play this game to get super speedy at counting in 5's. http://www.oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/spookyseq/spookycf5.html Remember to count on 5 from the last number to find the missing 5's number. Remember when we count in 5's the last digit is a five or a zero.
Today we splatted different numbers on the 100 square. We counted in 2's, then 5's and 10's. We looked at the final digits of numbers when we count in 2's, 5's and 10's and made our own 100 square patterns. We will be using these 100 squares a lot in class to help us count to 100 by 2's, 5's and 10's. Can you show your mummy or daddy how to count in 2's, 5's or 10's to 100 and tell them about the patterns we see? http://www.primarygames.co.uk/pg2/splat/splatsq100.html What are we counting in on this 100 chart?
We had a wonderful day celebrating Carnival at school today. Everyone looked great dressed up as book characters and First Grade did a great job in the assembly sharing with the other classes the kinds of books that we love. Enjoy the Carnival break and see you on Wednesday for 100's day. Don't forget your collection of 100 things.
Today we had a special visitor in First Grade. Mr. Miller came in with a special machine that makes static electricity. We were very brave and saw how we can conduct electricity in a safe way through our own bodies. We made a long bulb light with our noses and watched how people's hair stood up on end. We even made a long chain of children and passed the static electricity along the chain. Mr. Miller was really impressed with all the facts we have learnt about electricity and can't wait to see our budding scientists grow.
This week we have been looking at why some circuits work and some don't. We are doing a great job at saying why a circuit will not work and why not. Practise changing different parts of a circuit here and amaze your mum or dad by explaining why it does or doesn't work. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/6_7/electricity_fs.shtml You can do the quiz if you want. Can you get 10 out of 10?
Today we started counting groups of ten and seeing how many are extra to make the total number. Practice counting your tens and units here: http://www.ictgames.com/sharkNumbers/sharkNumbers_v5.html You can choose how tricky you want the numbers to be.
Today we all had a go at building and drawing a circuit. We are getting very good at naming all the different components and making the buzzers buzz! Practice making a circuit here to make a torch work. Can you add a switch? http://www.eon-uk.com/EnergyExperience/134.htm
Today we wrote in our journals about our toys with batteries. We had fun sharing our toys. In the afternoon, we looked at the difference between mains electricity and batteries. Can you sort the appliances? http://www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk/vtc/using_electricity/eng/Introduction/whiteboard.htm
Today we talked about electrical safety. We found lots of dangerous things in the house and garden here: http://www.switchedonkids.org.uk/ You can also see how electricity is made on the same page. Please keep safe!
We started our new Science topic 'Electricity' last week. We looked for things around our class that use electricity and we have looked at how electricity can be used to make light, sound, heat and to make things move. Today, we looked at the different things we need to make a circuit. We made a light bulb light and a buzzer buzz. It was a little bit noisy! Can you find the things that use energy in this home to make them work? http://www.eon-uk.com/EnergyExperience/136.htm
